My Answers:
1. tips related to the medium i'm using the most
So as far as the traditional media goes i tried a lot of stuff so it's going to be a little mixed
- When doing watercolors, always make a light sketch before coloring, or when doing the sketch with a softer B pencils, lift the graphite with kneaded eraser, or gently erase with a regular one
- For pencil sketches i feel like building up works the best, start with an H pencil or an HB pencil and add contrast with a B pencil
- When crosshatching while inking try to think about the curve of the object, don't just do straight lines
2. Tips related to anatomy
Anatomy will still be the death of me tbh
- Action lines are your FRIEND. before even drawing a figure try doing a random, fast, curved line and make the body follow it. it makes it a lot more dynamic
- HANDS ARE THE DEVILS but what i do *when i decide to do them right* is do a square and then for the fingers first add the dotts where they're supposed to start. Keep in mind that the three fingers in the middle usually go together while the thumb and the little fingers are separate. then add the fingers first as lines or oblong shapes, fix their shape later on.
- When drawing the torso PLEASE, PLEASE think about the bones, especially the ribcage, so don't make the body really straight and stick figure like, but make some curves for the ribs.
3. tips that improved your art
honestly this is where the real shit is at
- Don't just copy poses from other drawings! i used to do that and you willl honestly never learn anything this way. instead practise poses you see in movies, or on stock images, and keep in mind where the action line is
- When drawing bodies don't ever draw straight lines! nothing in the body is really straight *wink* always use the curved lines, or circles when drawing the base
- leave out the highlights when coloring. It makes your life easier, especially when inking or doing watercolors, It doesn't always look that well but keep practising. Or even include the highlights in the original sketch
4. Random tips
as if all of these weren't random as well
- i know everyone likes to do the two lines on the neck that create the V shape on the collar bone but for the love of god THINK ABOUT THEM! the collarbone goes straight to the start of the sholders and connects to them, so think about positioning it correctly.
- if you suck at drawing hands at least add the nails, it helps with seeing where the hand is turning
- experiment with facial expressions. Most of us do the basic ones all the time but try changing the shape of the mouth here and there, watch a movie and when you see a good expression try to simplify it and see how it works. Pay attention to the eyebrows when doing so. The expression can make a huge difference in your work.
